The hemispheric view of surface wind and temperature shows active Pacific and Atlantic tropical basins. The Pacific is and has been the most active basin so far this year, currently with Hurricane Kilo, Tropical Storm Ignatio, and Hurricane Jimena surrounding Hawaii, in addition to Tropical Depression 14-E off the Central American Coast. Having crossed the International Date Line yesterday, Kilo became simultaneously a Typhoon and a Hurricane, and was occurring on both Tuesday and Wednesday at the same time. Meanwhile in the Atlantic, lone Tropical Storm Fred churns off the coast of Africa, having in previous days become the farthest East hurricane ever to form, and the only Hurricane to strike the Cape Verde Islands in recorded meteorological history (100+ years).
